How do we help children understand the meaning of Pride – a joyful celebration that commemorates decades of struggle for human rights?

Pride Month recognizes the impact that LGBTQ+ individuals have had on history. Many events are held throughout the month of June, but the theme is carried throughout the year as we strive to better understand one another, be good allies, and make positive change in our classrooms and communities.

By talking openly about topics such as Pride, adults can help create a safer world for LGBTQIA+ kids and a kinder world for everyone. Reading together with children creates a safe, affirming space for asking questions and engaging in meaningful conversation. Check out Wilmette Public Library’s Pride Book List to find just right titles for celebrating Pride with intention and purpose.
