Annular Solar Eclipse

The library will be closed December 31 and January 1. Regular hours will resume Thursday, January 2. Happy Holidays!

Start Date

In exactly one month, the library will join millions of people across the Western Hemisphere to watch the Annular Solar Eclipse! Stop by on October 14 for events for all ages, including NASA's live stream of the eclipse in the Auditorium. Starting Sunday, October 1, you can register for a pair of solar viewing glasses here. Pick up starts on Saturday, October 7 at the Welcome Desk.

Annular Solar Eclipse: Also known as the “Ring of Fire”

Annular Solar Eclipses happen when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth while it's at its farthest point from Earth. Because the Moon is farther away from Earth, it appears smaller than the Sun and doesn't completely cover it. This causes a ring of bright sunlight, or annulus to be visible around the moon. According to NASA, this is the last Annular Solar Eclipse that will be visible from the U.S. until June 2039 – so make sure to join us on October 14! Want to learn more?
