Do you enjoy sharing the work of Jason Reynolds, Raina Telgemeier, and Mo Willems with young readers? Do you have the ability to choose the right book for the right child at the right time? Wilmette Public Library is looking for a part-time Youth Services Associate to provide expert reference and readers’ advisory services at our Youth Services desk. The ideal candidate will exhibit patience and creativity while possessing excellent customer service skills and an ability to demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of children’s literature to promote our dynamic collections.

Youth Services Associate’s Responsibilities:

  • Provide general and in-depth reference assistance in person, by telephone, and online to children and their caregivers.
  • Provide high quality readers’ advisory to assist patrons in selecting materials appropriate for their age, interest, and reading capabilities.
  • Assist and support department programs including traditional programming (story times) as well as special events and performances, seasonal reading clubs and other activities. 

Qualifications:

  • Library Technical Assistant or Bachelor’s degree in related field required.
  • 1 year of customer service required. Previous library experience highly preferred.
  • Ability to demonstrate excellent customer service experience in a public library setting.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of children’s literature and current trends in the delivery of library services to children.
  • Working knowledge of reference resources, in both print and non-print formats.
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Ability to understand and efficiently use our technology (Microsoft Office Suite) and troubleshoot technology-related issues.
  • Ability to demonstrate broad practical experience with integrated library systems (Polaris preferred), e-resources, and subscription databases.
  • Ability to make informed decisions independently and work collaboratively in a team environment.

Hours & Compensation:

  • One 4-hour weekday shift weekly.
  • One Saturday every 4 weeks: 1:00pm – 5:00pm.
  • One Sunday every 4 weeks: 12:00pm – 5:00pm (Sundays paid at time and a half.)
  • Ability to pick up extra shifts which can include weekdays, evenings and weekends, highly preferred. Weekday and evening shifts are typically 4 hours in length.
  • Starting hourly rate: $20.08 
  • Ability to earn paid time off (2 hours of benefit time for every 40 hours worked.)
